When Is a Good Time To Start? There's No Time Like Now
Some people say timing is everything. With a 1-year old son, a
7-year old daughter, and twins on the way, Pam Taylor decided the
timing was right to start taking college courses.
"I started taking distance learning courses so I could spend time
with my kids and still obtain an education," she says. "I was able to
keep up with my studies while in the hospital after having my twins."
Now Taylor's daughter is 9, her son is 3, and her twins are 2. As a
single mother, Taylor takes her classes where she says she needs to be:
home.
Convenience, Convenience, Convenience
Distance education comes in different formats, and Taylor knows
which one she likes best. "I prefer the online courses because
everything is right on the site," she says. "I like the flexibility to
learn and study when and where I want."
With that level of convenience, she has more time for her favorite home-based hobbies, reading and playing with her kids.
"This has really helped me learn without the constraints of having
to go to classes each week," she says. "I don't think I would have
started taking courses if it had not been for distance learning."
Still, convenient classes do not mean easy classes, according to
Taylor, who counsels distance learners to pursue their work with
determination.
"Take it just as seriously as you would a class on campus," she says. "Don't get behind on your studies."

Definite Goals Not Needed to Begin
Taylor understood the importance of beginning her college education even though her future plans have not yet fully jelled.
"I want to obtain my degree and maybe someday own and manage my own
business," she says. That idea alone was enough to drive her to jump
into college.
But Taylor is certain of one thing: Distance education is working for her.
"I don't see any difficulty or challenges with distance learning," she says. "It is great for me."
Pam Taylor attends St. Louis Community College in Missouri.
