Native Marylander Susan C. Butta is the vice president for public
affairs of Verizon Maryland, based in Baltimore, where she holds
wide-ranging responsibilities for the company's external communications
across the state. She not only directs local advertising and
employee information programs, she also leads Verizon's community
volunteer programs, corporate philanthropy, and economic development
efforts. She also oversees media relations in the state. Butta is
new to the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) Board of
Visitors, having joined in 2004.
Butta has spent her entire 25-year career specializing in the telecommunications
field, beginning in Washington, D.C., at the C&P Telephone Company. She
moved to Boston to work for New England Telephone and rose to the position of
product manager. There
Butta introduced new and controversial products such as Caller ID, Call Return,
Call Trace, and Repeat Dialing to New England consumers. She also handled
regulatory and stakeholder management functions for those products and services. Butta
was promoted again to staff director of media relations, acting as the company's
official spokeswoman to the major Boston media on all subjects.
Another promotion drew Butta back to Washington where, as the director
of public affairs, she managed internal and external communication for
Verizon's government relations team. She represented corporate
issues to state and federal regulators, legislators, and the
administration. In addition to participating in print and media
interviews, she coordinated interviews for Verizon executives.
Butta earned a BA in foreign languages from the University of Maryland,
College Park with honors from Sigma Delta Pi, Phi Eta Sigma, and Alpha
Lambda Delta. She also completed the Darden School's Certificate
for Power and Leadership Program at the University of Virginia.
An associate member of the National Press Club, Butta is a member of
the Book and Authors Committee and has hosted celebrity authors'
dinners, including one honoring Academy Award winner Kirk Douglas. |
