Richard C. Mike Lewin recently retired as group vice chairman and senior managing director of Legg Mason Wood Walker, Inc. As senior managing director in investment banking, Lewin served as a liaison between Legg Mason's analytical and banking teams and America's fastest growing companies, particularly in biotechnology, information technology, e-commerce, financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, and telecommunications. As vice chairman of Legg Mason Private Funds Group, Lewin established proprietary alternative investment vehicles. Before joining Legg Mason in 2001, Lewin served as secretary of Maryland's Department of Business and Economic Development, directing 325 employees and overseeing a budget of $125 million. The department works to increase private investment and jobs in the state, attract new businesses, encourage the expansion and retention of existing companies, and provide businesses in Maryland with workforce training and financial assistance. Lewin also formulated economic policy and legislative initiatives for the governor and the General Assembly and was instrumental in creating the Maryland Technology Development Corporation. Prior to his service with Maryland, Lewin was managing director of BT Alex Brown Incorporated, where he was deeply involved in raising capital for many of America's most successful companies. His overall experience in finance spans four decades. Lewin also has a long history of community, governmental, and charitable involvement, including board memberships in the Baltimore Economic Development Advisory Group, the Maryland Technology Development Corporation, and the Maryland Small Business Development Financing Administration. Presently, he is deeply involved in the development of a large multi-building commercial life sciences campus and the redevelopment of new neighborhoods adjacent to the Johns Hopkins University Medical Center as a member of the board of the East Baltimore Development Corporation. Lewin was special assistant to U.S. Rep. Clarence D. Long from 1962 to 1964 and the executive assistant to the comptroller of Maryland, Louis L. Goldstein, from 1966 to 1969. His charitable work includes organizations such as The Walters Art Museum and the Echo House Foundation, among many others. Lewin attended the University of Maryland from 1960 to 1965 and served in the U.S. Army National Guard as an artillery fire control specialist from 1962 to 1968. |
