Shepard's insurance career began in 1970 when he joined Life Investors, Inc., an insurance holding company where he went on to serve in a variety of management and executive roles, rising to the position of executive vice president and chief operating officer in 1985. He held that position until AEGON consolidated its other U.S. operations with Life Investors to form AEGON USA in 1989. In 1992, Shepard joined the AEGON NV executive board, and in 2002 he was appointed chairman of the executive board. Shepard holds an MBA degree from the University of Chicago. He currently serves as a member of the boards of directors of the Mercantile Bankshares Corporation, the CSX Corporation, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the Financial Services Roundtable. In addition, he is a trustee of Johns Hopkins Medicine and Johns Hopkins University. |

organization that is one of the largest listed insurance groups
worldwide. AEGON's markets include the United States, the Netherlands,
and the United Kingdom. The company operates in Canada, Hungary, Spain,
and Taiwan, and its global reach extends to Belgium, China, France,
Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Luxembourg, and Slovakia.
